I think I'll call this finished. It has been quite a learning experience with this new paper and technique, but I think I am gonna like it after all. Just takes getting used to and developing a system of working with the right kind of pencils and in the right way.

Yesterday at 11 am we had to say goodby to our little TC. We didn't even know he was ill until three days ago when I noticed him having problems. The vet found a cancerous tumor in his belly the following day. It was making him very uncomfortable, and looking at the x-rays I could understand why. This was our dear cat, Troubele. She was infected with the highly contagious Feline Leukemia virus when she was a kitten, presumably got it from her mother, and only lived a few short years. Finally, the portrait of my mother-in-law is finished. After the last update I wasn't quite happy with it, so I smoothed the skin a little more and nitpicked over the whole drawing until I had to stop or it would get ruined by overworking it. I really enjoyed working with the Staedler clutch pencils with 2mm carbon leads, B and HB.

Color Pencil on Ampersand PastelboardThis is worked after the instructions and design by Nicole Caulfield. It's a first for me to work on this surface and I am not sure if I like it or not. The colors sure seem very vibrant, and the speed of completion was relatively fast. I will definitely try again and see how it goes.

The leaves didn't turn out good enough and I need to practice drawing them a lot more for sure. Some were worked and reworked several times to the point where the paper just wouldn't cooperate anymore. Guess this one stays with me, and I'll have to do another one for Mom. I wonder if there is a good book or tutorial on drawing leaves available...anybody care to make a recommendation?

Here is todays update. I added some neocolor II as a base and started on the leaves. The neocolor sure helps to cut the amount of layers needed with the color pencils. A darker green would have been even better, but I just have a few measely colors right now so this had to do. Another thing that I've put on my huge wishlist, which is getting longer and longer. I participated in a drawing challenge at LMA Forum and this cp drawing is my attempt. I find Roses hard to render because of all the twists and turns of the petals. This is just an ok drawing, but it's not all bad; a beginning for sure, and with practise (lots) perhaps I'll get better. I really do enjoy this type of close-up of flowers and will continue to explore more.

This was done with watersoluble graphite and regular Hb graphite pencil. It turned out a couple of shades too dark I think.

This was done after a tutorial by Dors, from LMA Forum. It's my first free-hand Rose and I am pretty proud of it, although the colors do not flow smoothly into each other on the petals and look a little uneven. It was hard without the right tools (and know-how) to get it to look right. It's a beginning though. Thanks Dors for getting me started in this new adventure!

finished Jan. 24 update Jan. 23 I wanted to create a satin or silk effect, but realize that I'd choosen the wrong paper for it. Should have used Bristol smooth, instead of Stonehenge. Oh well, this portrait has been a learning experience from the beginning anyway, and I am glad for the mistakes.
